Roles of FtsA and FtsZ in activation of division sites.

چکیده
Increasing FtsZ induces the formation of minicells at cell poles but does not increase the frequency or timing of central divisions. A coordinate increase in both FtsZ and FtsA, however, increases the frequency of both polar and central divisions.

Colocalization of cell division proteins FtsZ and FtsA to cytoskeletal structures in living Escherichia coli cells by using green fluorescent protein.
In the current model for bacterial cell division, FtsZ protein forms a ring that marks the division plane, creating a cytoskeletal framework for the subsequent action of other proteins such as FtsA. This putative protein complex ultimately generates the division septum. Herein we report that FtsZ and FtsA proteins tagged with green fluorescent protein (GEP) colocalize to division-site ring-like...
متن کاملInhibition of cell division initiation by an imbalance in the ratio of FtsA to FtsZ.
Elevated levels of FtsA protein block cell division at a very early stage, similar to that caused by inhibition of the action of FtsZ. In contrast, overexpression of FtsA and FtsZ together does not block division. A specific ratio of FtsA to FtsZ protein, therefore, is required for cell division.
متن کاملDr-FtsA, an Actin Homologue in Deinococcus radiodurans Differentially Affects Dr-FtsZ and Ec-FtsZ Functions In Vitro
The Deinococcus radiodurans genome encodes homologues of divisome proteins including FtsZ and FtsA. FtsZ of this bacterium (Dr-FtsZ) has been recently characterized. In this paper, we study FtsA of D. radiodurans (Dr-FtsA) and its involvement in regulation of FtsZ function. Recombinant Dr-FtsA showed neither ATPase nor GTPase activity and its polymerization was ATP dependent. Interestingly, we ...
متن کاملInteractions between heterologous FtsA and FtsZ proteins at the FtsZ ring.
FtsZ and FtsA are essential for cell division in Escherichia coli and colocalize to the septal ring. One approach to determine what regions of FtsA and FtsZ are important for their interaction is to identify in vivo interactions between FtsA and FtsZ from different species. As a first step, the ftsA genes of Rhizobium meliloti and Agrobacterium tumefaciens were isolated and characterized. In ad...
متن کاملA bacterial actin unites to divide bacterial cells.
Once thought to exist only in eukaryotic cells, the highly conserved bacterial cytoskeleton is now known to function analogously to its eukaryotic counterparts, particularly in cell shape and division. For instance, the actin-like MreB protein and its homologs are important to maintain cell shape in many rod-shaped bacteria, probably by organizing how peptidoglycan is synthesized. FtsZ, a tubul...
